My apologies for taking so long to continue my play with ice cubes, as I got distracted with a few other posts that I wanted to schedule beforehand. Southern Cola isn’t a new idea, but I did make a minor change by adding the juice and simple syrup to a straw shaped ice cube. This way the lime is slowly infused, and the flavor changes (for the better) the more you drink it.
This was my first time trying Amaro CioCiaro and it was much harder than I thought it would be to find it in Los Angeles. The ingredients of this liquor are fiercely protected, but has a deceptively and delightfully strong taste.
SOUTHERN COLA
1 1/2 ounces Amaro CioCiaro (other brands will do as well)
1 lime juice ice cube straw (I used a long shaped ice tray from Ikea–make cubes using 3/4 cup fresh lime juice and 1/4 cup water, a teaspoon of simple syrup and slivers of lime peel)
4 ounces Coca-Cola (use Mexican Coca-Cola, which is made with cane sugar instead of corn syrup, if you can find it. Coke Zero works quite well also)
Directions:
Pour in the Amaro, add the Mexican Coke, and gently stir with the lime “straw”. Sip and enjoy!

Looks yummy but is it okay to pour it over ice?
Yes! Definitely okay:)
Wow! This looks delicious. The ice straw is a cool idea… How did the drink taste? What was the simple syrup for… Is it a sweetener? Also, why is it called southern cola?
Yeah the simple syrup is just a sweetener. You don’t have to use it, but I like mine with a little extra sweetness. I’m not sure where the name Southern cola came from. I can only assume that those of us who are from the South love both colas and strong drinks, so perhaps that’s why;)
By the way, the photos of the recipe and the drinks are really nice. They look sharp. What kind of camera did you use?
Thanks! I’m glad you like the pictures. You can find the camera type on my FAQ page.
Great! Thanks =)
